'Gifts' for safe bus drivers will cost up to €1m

It comes as cash-strapped passengers have seen fare increases of around 5pc this year, but Bus Eireann says that the scheme will save the company money by cutting the cost of repairs. Bus Eireann is looking for a firm to provide the gift cards as part of its Safe Driving Awards, which could cost up to &euro. "Our drivers can each travel more than one million kilometres over a year and it is a remarkable achievement to be accident free, given the distances they drive in often difficult conditions. A spokesman for the company said it was "long-standing practice" to reward drivers who had been accident free over significant periods of time. "The Safe Driving Awards are a means to congratulate drivers for their skill and expertise in being accident-free. Saturday morning was an early start for all the participants and all their supporters, first up were the U 13 Project team of Daniel and James Dempsey, Gearoid Blackburn and Grace Mernagh with their project on "Litter", the team gave a great... 27 young members of Clonroche Poulpeasty community games, travelled to Athlone on Friday May 27th for the National Finals, together with ten managers the group got underway by bus early on Friday morning. The Cross country runners were also out early , Shane Greene and Connal Flood competing in the U14 boys team, both lads ran a great race, but unfortunatly was not enough to secure another run in the final. more...
